What is NLP?

A complicated title for something which is quite simple:

  • Neuro: The brain and the central and peripheral nervous systems.
  • Linguistic: The language of the brain. We all store our experiences of the world neurologically, verbally and non-verbally, via our five senses; pictures, sounds, touch/feelings, smell and taste.
  • Programming: How we act or behave.

So NLP is the study of how language, both verbal and non-verbal, has been stored in our nervous system and how these unconsciously stored programmes affect the way we respond to the world around us.

NLP is useful in the management of our emotions because our emotions are actually neurological programmes that we run. NLP techniques allow us to consciously re-programme our neurology through visual, auditory and kinaesthetic techniques.

To change our unconscious programming, we need to make these programmes conscous. An effective way to become more conscious is to pay more attention to our senses. In particular what are we seeing, hearing and feeling; our visual, auditory and kinaesthetic (VAK) senses. The reason why our VAK senses are so useful when it comes to re-programming our unconscious mind is because they are available to us to change in any given moment. All my NLP techniques use visual, auditory and kinaesthetic strategies to consciously change our unconscious programmes which are not serving us, and replace these programmes which are holding us back, with positive programmes that support us.
